چکیده

The phenomenon of ageing structures has focused attention on the problem of multiple-site damage (MSD) and wide spread fatigue damage (WFD). In isolation each ̄aw or crack may be safe. However, the cumulative e€ect of multiple, interacting cracks may signi®cantly degrade the damage tolerance of the structure. This paper presents an overview of a new ®nite element alternating technique algorithm suitable for calculating mode I stress-intensity factors for an arbitrary number of coplanar interacting three dimensional cracks. This new algorithm has been evaluated for a variety of crack aspect ratios and crack separation ratios for fully embedded elliptical cracks, semielliptical surface ̄aws and for quarter elliptical cracks. In each instance, test cases have been studied for both ®nite and in®nite geometries. Results of three of these cases are presented in this paper. These results indicate an agreement to within 4% for all cases checked. # 1999 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Numerical Analysis of the Effect of External Circumferential Elliptical Cracks in Transition Thickness Zone of Pressurized Pipes Using XFEM

The present work investigates the effect of the elliptical three-dimensional (3D) cracks on a pipe with thickness transition, considering internal pressure. Level sets were defined using the extended finite element method (XFEM), the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of 3D cracks were investigated and compared between straight pipes and pipes with thickness transition. The results show that the X...

Bifurcation and stability of structures with interacting propagating cracks

A general method to calculate the tangential stiffneis matrix of a structure with a system of interacting propagating cracks is presented. With the help of this matrix. the conditions of bifurcation, stability of state and stability of post-bifurcation path are formulated and the need to distinguish between stability of state and stability path is emphasized. The formulation is applied to symme...

Numerical Analysis of the Effect of External Circumferential Cracks in Transition Thickness Zone of Pressurized Pipes Using XFEM – Elastic-Plastic Behavior

The elastic-plastic behavior of the material is considered to analyze the effect of an external circumferential crack on a pipe with thickness transition and double slopes. Using the extended finite element method (XFEM), the J-integral of 3D cracks were investigated and compared between straight pipes and pipes with thickness transition and different slopes. Considering internal press...

Engineering Critical Assessments of Marine Pipelines with 3D Surface Cracks Considering Weld Mismatch

Offshore pipelines are usually constructed by the use of girth welds, while welds may naturally contain flaws. Currently, fracture assessment procedures such as BS 7910 are based on the stress-based methods and their responses for situations with large plastic strain is suspicious. DNV-OS-F101 with limited modifications proposes a strain-based procedure for such plastic loads. In this paper 3D ...
